I'm not dirty, I'm an artist!

I always wonder what people think of me when they see my hands. Try as I might, they always seem to look dirty. Whether I have paint under my nails or whether they are stained from coffee and walnut inks or some other concoction I'm trying that day, I always feel the need to explain. 'I'm not dirty, I'm an artist!'

Yesterday I was in the studio painting when I looked down and saw this ---->

It was comical enough that I snapped this photo. I had a meeting in a few hours and I knew that no amount of soap, water or soaking was going to clean up this mess. I'd just have to explain....again.

  1. Hi Jamie - You have been tagged to share 5 things about yourself that perhaps others did not know. After listing your 5 things you can tag 5 other girls. It's a fun way to get to know more about each other. Have a great day! smiles - BJ

PS: I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with paint and stains under my nails...LOL.

  2. Jamie, I know what you mean about the "dirt." I hand dye fabric. It's called hand dyed for two reasons! I use a product called ReDuRan that works pretty good. The cuticles are hardest.

I am 47. My mother the Dirt Nazi inspects my fingernails each time she sees me. She thinks she is being surreptitious. She thinks she is keeping her disgust hidden.

When I was small, she would painfully dig all the dirt from under my fingernails with a sharp object. Even the ones with invisible dirt, hidden dirt that you know is there but could not see. She would scold me for wincing. I figure that the embarrassment I feel at having "dirty" fingernails is just another flashback from childhood.

She never understood the art thing either. It was messy and didn’t belong in her house.

"If it's not one thing, it's your Mother."

    Long live dirt.
